Digital marketing

Digital marketing in Barcelona: the click is expensive here, win where you do not pay

In this city you are not competing with the four businesses on your street: you are competing with everyone bidding on your word. And you pay that bid on every click.

Almost every digital marketing in Barcelona conversation that reaches our desk starts the same way: «we tried ads and the money vanished». It is usually true, and it is rarely the campaign's fault. It is that here a paid click costs more than anywhere else in Catalonia, and a small business cannot win that fight with money.

Barcelona from the air: thousands of businesses competing for the same searches

In Barcelona you bid against everyone

The figure that explains it: Idescat counts 71,796 Social Security contribution accounts in the city. Those are workplaces, not separate companies, and a large share of them sell the same thing you do to the same people.

When fifty of them want to appear on the same search, the price of the click is not set by Google: it is set by them, bidding. That is why the same word costs one thing in a small town and something else entirely here.

How the auction works, in two lines

Every time somebody searches, an instant auction runs between everyone who wants to appear. You pay when somebody clicks, and what you pay depends on how many are bidding on that word and how much they are willing to pay.

Translated: more competition, more expensive for the same visitor. No trick gets around that, only better ways of buying.

What you pay for per visit, and what you do not

Going through a turnstile, like an ad that charges every time somebody clicks

Worth being clear about the difference, because hardly anybody draws it. There are channels where you pay every time somebody arrives, and channels where the work is paid for once and visits keep coming afterwards without going through the till.

The four places where there is no cost per click

  • Your Google listing. It shows on the map and on the phone for free.
  • Reviews. They cannot be bought and they decide more than the ad.
  • Content that answers what people actually ask.
  • Your own list, which does not get more expensive every year.

None of them is free: they cost work. But the cost does not multiply with every new visitor, and that is the whole difference when clicks are expensive.

The Google listing is the ad that is not auctioned

In a city this dense, the map takes an enormous share of «near me» searches. And there you do not bid: you win by having the listing complete, real opening hours, photos of what you actually do and the usual questions answered.

How to set it up and what to check monthly is in your Google Business profile.

Reviews are the bid nobody pays for

Between two businesses in the same neighbourhood at the same price, the one with recent, answered reviews wins. That is not for sale in any auction, and it moves the needle most in a city where there are fifteen options within ten minutes.

Asking for them without being a nuisance has its technique: it is in how to get Google reviews.

Content that answers what people ask

Long, specific searches — the ones from somebody who already knows what they want — have far less competition than two-word ones. And they bring exactly the customer who is not ringing around for a price but ready to hire.

That is where a small business really can beat a chain, because the chain does not write about the odd case in your trade. That is what a business blog is for.

Your own list is the only thing that does not get pricier

Everything else does: the click, the rent, the staff. A list of people who gave you permission to write to them costs the same to send to a hundred as to a thousand, and it does not depend on any auction or on a network changing its rules.

How to build it without buying anything is in email marketing for small businesses.

And if you do pay, buy narrow

This is not an article against ads. It is an article against buying wide in the most expensive city. When you do have to pay, you pay for what actually converts and switch off the rest.

How to narrow a campaign here

  1. By radius. Your neighbourhood and the two next to it, not «Barcelona».
  2. By keyword. Three and four-word searches, not the expensive generic one.
  3. By hours. When there is somebody there to answer the phone.
  4. By service. Only the one with margin, not the whole catalogue.

What happens when nobody narrows it is covered in Google Ads spends and does not sell.

Your real radius is not the city

Barcelona has 487,185 cars and 265,348 motorbikes, but most people sort out nearby whatever can be sorted out nearby. Nobody crosses the city for something four streets away.

Paying to appear across all of Barcelona is paying for visits that were never going to come. The neighbourhood rules, and that applies to SEO too: it is in SEO in Barcelona.

Here they compare you before they call

51.0 % of the population aged 15 and over has higher education, the highest share around. That customer looks at three websites, reads reviews, compares and arrives with their questions ready.

With that audience the ad only opens the door: what closes is what they find inside. What that website has to look like is in web design in Barcelona.

Visitors search for the same things your neighbours do

The city has 752 hotels with 83,454 beds. All those people search on their phones for the same things a resident does: where to eat, where to get something fixed, where to buy. And they push up the price of the same words you are bidding on.

Another reason to work on the map and the reviews: that is where a visitor decides, looking at photos and a rating, not at ads.

The shopfront still counts

The tidy shopfront of a neighbourhood business, the channel you do not pay for

It sounds like another era and it is not. In a city people walk, plenty of them find you by passing the door and then look you up on the phone to confirm. If what they see on the street and what they see on the screen do not match, it falls apart.

Which is why the photos on the listing have to be the real ones, not stock.

What does not work in Barcelona

  • Advertising to the whole city on a neighbourhood budget.
  • Bidding on the generic word against chains with a buying team.
  • Copying the market leader's website, which speaks to a different customer.
  • Switching ads on before the listing is in order, which is paying for what you already had free.

When paying does make sense

When you open, when you launch a new service, when there is a short season, or when you want to fill a specific slot. In those cases the ad buys time, which is the one thing you cannot get any other way.

Outside that, the same money put into the listing, reviews and content returns more over twelve months. And it shows most the following year, when you stop paying and the visits keep arriving.

The month you switch the ads off

This is the test that separates one channel from the other, and hardly anybody runs it on purpose: switch the campaigns off for a month and see what happens.

What collapses and what carries on

  • Paid traffic disappears the same day. No hangover, no momentum.
  • The map keeps bringing people, because the listing does not switch off.
  • Articles keep pulling visits, the old ones more than the new.
  • The list is still yours, to switch on whenever you want.

If everything collapses when you switch off, you had not built anything: you had been renting visits.

What we look at every month

Not impressions. Where each customer came from and what each one costs by channel.

The four numbers that matter here

  1. How many come from the map and how many from the ad.
  2. What a customer costs on each channel, not what a click costs.
  3. New reviews and which service they talk about.
  4. How many arrive already decided, without getting three other quotes.

If you sell to companies rather than the public, the route changes quite a bit, and we cover that in process automation in Barcelona.

What digital marketing in Barcelona costs

Our rates are published, with no need to ask for a quote to find out the price. In prices, Tu Landing is 100 € a month and Tu Web 200 €, with domain, hosting, email and maintenance included; the presence plans, which carry the digital marketing, run at 400, 750 and 1,500 € a month. All plus VAT and with no lock-in.

One thing worth stating plainly: the ad spend is not included in those rates. The client puts that money in, it sits separately and it is visible in full. In this city, our advice is usually to start without it.

From Sant Antoni de Calonge, with Barcelona businesses

We work out of the Palau Firal in Sant Antoni de Calonge and come down to the city when needed. For local matters, the Barcelona City Council website publishes the district calendar and trade paperwork, which helps line campaigns up with what is happening in the neighbourhood. And if you want to see how many companies in Spain use online advertising, the national statistics office publishes it yearly.

If you have already burned budget on ads, send us through the contact form or by WhatsApp what you spent last month and how many customers came out of it. In ten minutes we will tell you whether the problem was the campaign or where you were bidding.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about digital marketing in Barcelona

Why is a paid click more expensive in Barcelona?+

Because the price is set by an auction among everyone who wants to appear on the same search, and there are 71,796 contribution accounts competing in the same city. The more people bidding on a word, the more the same visitor costs. It is not a Google surcharge: it is competition.

So should I not run ads in Barcelona?+

You should, but narrow: your neighbourhood and the two next to it instead of the whole city, three or four-word searches instead of the expensive generic one, hours when somebody is there to answer, and only the service with margin. Buying wide in the most expensive city is what burns budgets.

Where do you win without paying per click?+

In four places: the Google listing, reviews, content that answers what people actually ask, and your own list. None is free and all cost work, but the cost does not multiply with every new visitor, and that is the difference.

When does paying for ads make sense?+

When you open, when you launch a new service, when there is a short season, or when you want to fill a specific slot. In those cases the ad buys time, which is the one thing you cannot get another way. Outside that, the same money returns more in the listing, reviews and content.

Is the ad budget included in your rates?+

No. Tu Landing is 100 € a month and Tu Web 200 €, and the presence plans 400, 750 and 1,500 €, all plus VAT and with no lock-in. The money spent on ads is put in by the client, sits separately and is visible in full. In Barcelona we usually suggest starting without it.

Do I have to advertise across the whole city?+

Almost never. There are 487,185 cars and 265,348 motorbikes, but people sort out nearby what can be sorted out nearby: nobody crosses Barcelona for something four streets away. Paying to appear citywide is paying for visits that were never going to come.

What do I check every month to know it is working?+

Not impressions. How many customers come from the map and how many from the ad, what a customer costs on each channel (not what a click costs), new reviews, and how many arrive already decided without getting three other quotes.
