SEO in Barcelona: where you actually win in a crowded city

In Barcelona you are up against chains, portals and directories with budgets you will not match. The good news is that the fight worth having is a different one, and that one can be won.

Search Google for the service you sell followed by "Barcelona". What comes up is portals, comparison sites and two or three big brands. If your plan is to overtake them on that exact phrase, settle in for a few years. SEO in Barcelona is won somewhere else, and that somewhere is much closer to your business than it looks.

Why SEO in Barcelona is nothing like SEO in a small town

In a village in Girona, ranking first for "plumber" is a matter of a well-kept listing and a decent website. In Barcelona that same search is dominated by platforms that have spent years piling up links and reviews, and that can afford to lose money to win a customer.

The practical difference: the generic search brings lots of traffic and few customers, while the specific search — the neighbourhood, the exact problem, the urgency — brings fewer visits and far more work. That is the ground where an ordinary company competes on equal terms.

Where it is actually won: the neighbourhood, not the city

Nobody living in Sants searches for "accountant Barcelona": they search "accountant Sants" or "accountant near me" with a phone in their hand. Barcelona is ten districts and more than seventy neighbourhoods, and each one behaves almost like a separate city.

  • One page per service and area, with real content rather than the same template with the neighbourhood swapped. Google spots cloned pages and ignores them.
  • Searches with buying intent: "emergency blind repair Gràcia" converts far better than "blinds Barcelona", even at a tenth of the volume.
  • Real questions from your customers turned into pages: what it costs, how long it takes, what is included, what happens if it goes wrong.

The map decides more than the website

In a local search on a phone, the first thing on screen is the map with three listings. You do not get in there by having the prettiest site: you get in by having a complete, active Google Business listing — right category, exact address, real opening hours, recent photos and answered reviews. Google's guidelines for representing your business are stricter than most people assume, and ignoring them is the fastest route to a suspended listing. We publish articles on the listing every month precisely because an active listing outranks a dormant one.

How long SEO in Barcelona takes

This is where promises deserve suspicion. With the work done properly, the first movement shows up in month three or four: long-tail searches starting to bring visits and the odd enquiry. The words that really matter take six months to a year, and in fiercely contested sectors — lawyers, dentists, renovations — it can be longer.

What can be accelerated is the map. A neglected listing that gets brought up to date usually moves within weeks, because most of the competition has left theirs just as neglected. That is why we almost always start there: it returns phone calls first while the rest matures.

One warning about the pitch: anyone promising first place in a month is either selling ads dressed as SEO or about to do something that will cost you later. Google's own guide to its ranking systems makes it clear there is no magic lever: there are dozens of signals and none of them is for sale.

What it costs and what is included

Our prices are published on the pricing page, plus VAT and with no lock-in:

  • Basic Presence, €400 a month. Hosting, migration included, ten mailboxes, three monthly articles on your site and three on your Google listing, replies to every review, and positioning inside AI answers.
  • Mid Presence, €750 a month. Five articles on the site and five on the listing, fifteen mailboxes, and Google Ads and Meta Ads management to cover you while SEO matures.
  • Advanced Presence, €1,500 a month. Seven and seven, twenty-five mailboxes, campaigns and two monthly posts on your social channels.

SEO is not a separate line billed per keyword: it is what those articles, that structure and that listing do together, month after month.

The part nobody pays for, and it often decides

Two things that cost nothing and move more than most reports. First, answering reviews — all of them, the bad ones too, without templates. Second, keeping the same details — name, address, phone, opening hours — identical on the site, the listing and every directory you appear in. When they do not match, the search engine hesitates, and a hesitant search engine does not show you.

Spanish, Catalan or both

Both languages live side by side in Barcelona searches, and they do not always mean the same thing: in some sectors Catalan signals proximity, in others the bulk of the queries arrive in Spanish. Publishing in two languages doubles the work, so the decision comes from looking at how your customer searches rather than from principle. Our own site is in Spanish, Catalan and English for that reason, not for show.

What to check every month

Rankings are the flashiest metric and the least informative. They shift weekly, they depend on where you search from, and they say nothing about whether the phone rings. These four numbers do:

  • Calls and directions from the Google listing. The most direct figure there is: people who found you on the map and acted on it.
  • Forms and WhatsApp messages arriving from search, kept separate from the ones arriving through other channels.
  • How many different searches bring you visits. If last month you were found through fifteen queries and this month through forty, the content is doing its job even if the headline keyword has not moved.
  • The ten searches that genuinely matter, chosen at the start and tracked consistently. Ten, not two hundred: the rest is padding for reports.

With that on a single sheet, five minutes tell you whether the month went well. And if it did not, they tell you where to look.

Five questions before signing with an SEO agency

  • Which specific searches will we work on in the first three months, and why those?
  • Who writes the content, and who reviews it before it goes live?
  • Will the Search Console, Analytics and Google Business accounts be in my name?
  • If I stop working with you, do I keep the content and the access?
  • How will we measure whether this works, beyond rankings?

That last one matters most. Rankings move every week; what counts is calls, enquiries and visits arriving to buy what you sell. If a report only shows lines going up, half of it is missing.

We work from Palamós, with clients in Barcelona

We are three partners with an office in Palamós: Ivan runs application and web development, Jordi handles marketing and campaigns, Izan looks after cybersecurity and data. If you are setting the business up right now, Barcelona Activa offers public resources and free training for companies in the city. With Barcelona we work remotely and visit when it is worth it, which for SEO is plenty: the work lives in your site, your listing and your content, not in sitting in your office.

If you want to know where your SEO in Barcelona would start, message us and we will tell you what the first three months would look like. If we think your case is solved with the listing and two well-built pages, we will say so even when a bigger plan would suit us better.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about SEO in Barcelona

How long does SEO in Barcelona take?+

The first movement shows in month three or four, with long-tail searches starting to bring visits. The most contested terms take six months to a year. The Google listing is the exception: worked on properly, it usually moves within weeks.

How much does SEO in Barcelona cost?+

It is included in our plans: from €400 a month with three articles on the site, three on the Google listing, replies to reviews and positioning inside AI answers; €750 adds paid campaigns and more content; €1,500 is the maximum content plus social. All plus VAT, no lock-in.

Is it worth competing for “service + Barcelona”?+

Rarely at the start. Those searches are held by portals and big brands with years of head start. You begin with the neighbourhood, the specific service and searches with buying intent, which bring fewer visits and many more customers.

Do I need an office in Barcelona to rank there?+

For the map you do need a real, verifiable address in the area; Google does not accept fake ones. For the rest of the work, no: it lives in the website, the content and the mentions. We are based in Palamós and work with Barcelona clients remotely.

Should I publish in Spanish or Catalan?+

It depends on how your customer searches. In some sectors Catalan adds proximity; in others nearly every query arrives in Spanish. It is worth checking before deciding, because two languages double the work and do not always pay off.

Can I do SEO myself?+

The Google listing, the photos and the reviews, yes — and that is the part that returns calls soonest. What usually stalls is consistent content and the technical side of the site, which is where an agency comes in. Start with the listing and see whether that is enough.
