Web design in Mataró: rebuild the site or fix the one you have?

Almost nobody calls to "get a website". They call because the one they have brings nothing and they cannot tell whether it can be fixed or has to be started again.

The same conversation comes up a lot around here. A business in Mataró with a site built six or seven years ago, which cost a fair bit, is not exactly ugly and does not bring in a single call. The question is rarely what web design in Mataró costs, but something more uncomfortable: whether it is worth touching what is there or whether it should be scrapped and started again. This article is about that, with the specific signs that settle it.

Who you compete with in a city of 130,000

Mataró has 130,887 residents in 22.53 km², according to the municipality in figures published by Idescat: nearly 5,831 people per square kilometre. And another number explains the day to day better: 9,015 people are registered as self-employed in the city, 7,035 of them in services, plus 43,950 general-scheme registrations tied to accounts here.

Translated: for almost any trade there is competition within the same neighbourhood, and the customer compares on their phone before calling anyone. Your site is not competing against the idea of a website you had in 2018; it competes against the one the customer opened right before opening yours.

The right question is not what a website costs

It is what is wrong with yours. A site can fail in four different places and only one of them is solved by rebuilding it: it can be slow, badly written, invisible on Google, or perfectly fine with nobody looking after it. Rebuilding a site that only needed a clean-up is throwing money away, and patching one built on an eight-year-old foundation is throwing it away twice.

The first thing we do when somebody writes to us with this doubt is look at the site the way a customer does: on a phone, on mobile data, having never seen it before. That is where the signs show up.

Five signs it needs rebuilding

1. It takes more than three seconds to open on a phone

You can measure it yourself in a minute with Google's speed tool. If the site takes forever, it does not matter how well written it is: half the visitors have left before seeing it. Sometimes it is fixed by compressing images and removing plugins, but when the problem is the foundation it is built on, there is no patch. We cover it in full in why your website is slow on mobile.

2. You cannot change a price or an opening time without calling someone

If changing one figure means emailing whoever built the site and waiting three days, the site is not entirely yours. It is the clearest sign of the lot, and the most expensive: when changing something costs a phone call and an invoice, it never gets changed, and the site ages on its own.

3. It does not say where you are or how far you go

Many sites around here never mention Mataró, or only mention it in the footer. If you also work in Argentona, Cabrera, Vilassar or Arenys, that has to be written with names, not with a "metropolitan area" nobody searches for. Without it, neither Google nor a customer knows whether you serve them.

4. The only way to get in touch is a form

An eight-field form that goes to an inbox nobody checks. Most people today would rather message on WhatsApp or call directly, and they want to see the button without hunting for it. If your site hides the contact details, you are losing enquiries that were already decided.

5. You don't even show up when searching your own business name

This one alarms people, and it is common. If you type your company name into Google and a directory shows up before your own site, something is broken: the site may be blocked to search engines, duplicated across two domains or missing the basic tags. Check this before rebuilding anything, because it sometimes gets solved in an afternoon.

When it does not need rebuilding

There are plenty of cases where we say no. If the site loads fast, you can edit it yourself, it runs on a maintained platform and it only lacks content or structure, it can be fixed by working on it: rewriting service pages with the words customers use, building one page per thing you sell, sorting out internal links and properly connecting the Google Business Profile.

That costs far less than a new project and usually moves the needle more in the first three months. Rebuilding only pays off when the problem is the foundation: speed, depending on somebody else for every change, or a structure that cannot be straightened out.

What happens to Google if you rebuild it

A site can be rebuilt without losing rankings, but it takes care. You have to keep the addresses that were already working or redirect them one by one, keep the text that was ranking and leave no orphan pages behind. Google's own guide on site moves with URL changes explains it step by step, and we have it summarised in how to migrate a website without losing rankings.

The typical fall when this is done badly costs months of work. Done properly, within two or three weeks the new site is where the old one was, and it climbs from there.

Which pages a local business site needs

Fewer than you get sold, and better distributed. With a local business we almost always work like this:

  • One page per service. Not a single "services" page with eight paragraphs: one for each thing you sell, with its own title and its own text.
  • A prices or ranges page. Hiding the price loses against an honest range with an explanation of what it depends on.
  • An about page, with faces and the premises, not stock photography.
  • Real contact details: phone, WhatsApp, address and the map, all visible without scrolling.

With that and an up-to-date Google profile, a Mataró business competes. Everything else is an extra you add once the basics work.

Spanish, Catalan and visitors from abroad

If your customer searches in Catalan and you only publish in Spanish, somebody else takes those searches. It does not mean duplicating the site by hand: it is built with the right language tags so each person sees their version. In a coastal city with visitors coming through, English adds up too depending on the business, though it does not always pay off from day one.

What web design costs in Mataró

Our prices are published. The one-page landing is 100 € a month and the site with up to ten subpages is 200 €, both with hosting, domain, email and maintenance included, and with the site built by us with no upfront payment. The 200 € plan also includes one monthly article.

If you also want somebody working on rankings and the Google profile every month, the 400 €, 750 € and 1,500 € plans add articles, posts on your profile, answered reviews, campaigns and social media. All with no lock-in, VAT on top and migration included. If you want to compare first, the full breakdown is in how much a website costs.

Timings: what actually delays a website

A ten-page site takes three to four weeks once the material is there. What delays it is almost never the design: it is the photos that do not exist, the text that has to be pulled out of a meeting and the decisions left hanging —which services go in, which prices are shown, who reviews it—. If you have that half thought through before starting, the deadline holds.

The part we do in person is the part worth it: the first meeting and, if needed, the photo day at your premises. The rest runs better over a video call with a shared screen.

How to tell where you stand today

Three checks you can run this afternoon, with your phone and no tools:

  • Search for your service plus "Mataró" and see whether you appear in the map and on the first screen.
  • Open your site on mobile data, no wifi, and count the seconds until something shows.
  • Try changing a price yourself. If you cannot, you already have half the answer.

If all three go badly, this is not about touch-ups. If only one fails, it can almost certainly be fixed without rebuilding anything.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about web design in Mataró

How much does a website cost in Mataró?+

Our prices are published: 100 € a month for the one-page landing and 200 € for the site with up to ten subpages, both with hosting, domain, email and maintenance included and no upfront payment. If you also want rankings and the Google profile worked on every month, plans run from 400 to 1,500 € a month. Excluding VAT and with no lock-in.

How do I know whether to rebuild the site or just fix it?+

Check five things: whether it takes more than three seconds on a phone, whether you can change a price yourself, whether it says where you are and how far you go, whether the only way to get in touch is a form, and whether you show up when searching your own business name. One or two signs usually mean fixing it; four or five mean the foundation is the problem and rebuilding is cheaper.

Will I lose Google rankings if I rebuild the site?+

Not if it is done properly. You have to keep the addresses that were working or redirect them one by one, keep the text that was ranking and leave no loose pages. When it is looked after, the new site recovers what the old one had within two or three weeks. When it is not, months of work are lost.

How long does it take to have the site live?+

Three to four weeks for a ten-page site, counting from when we have the material. What usually causes delays is not the design: it is the photos that need taking, the text that comes out of a meeting and the pending decisions about which services and prices to show.

Does the site need to be in Catalan and Spanish?+

If your customers search in both, yes, and it does not mean duplicating the work by hand: it is built with the correct language tags so each person sees their version. In a coastal city English can add up depending on the business, but it does not always pay off from day one.

Do you work in Mataró if you are based in Palamós?+

Yes. We are an hour up the coast and we look after businesses across the Maresme. Day-to-day work happens over video calls with a shared screen, and we come in person when it adds something: the first meeting, the photo day at your premises and the important reviews.
