Digital marketing in Mataró: where to start without wasting money

Thirty minutes from Barcelona, 130,000 residents and a whole city of retail. The fight here isn't about budget, it's about order.

Mataró has 130,887 residents across 22.53 km² and is the capital of the Maresme, according to the municipality figures published by Idescat. Enough people to live off the local market, and close enough to Barcelona that your customers compare you with businesses there without thinking twice. Which is why digital marketing in Mataró isn't about outspending the shop next door: it's about doing things in the right order.

What makes a Maresme business different

Three things come up again and again in the city's companies, and they shape any plan:

  • Half the city works elsewhere. The Idescat figure confirms it: the daytime population is smaller than the registered one. Plenty of people head to Barcelona in the morning and come back in the evening, so they search at odd hours and from outside the municipality.
  • You compete with Barcelona whether you like it or not. For many services, your potential customer walks past dozens of alternatives every day. Your advantage is proximity and trust, and that has to be said on the website, not left implied.
  • Retail weighs heavily. Mataró has a dense commercial and services fabric, with textiles as its historical backdrop. These are businesses built on recommendation and repeat custom, where a well-kept Google profile outperforms any campaign.

Then there's language. Here some searches happen in Catalan and some in Spanish. Having the site in both multiplies the combinations you can appear for without doubling the business.

The right order, and why it matters

The costliest mistake isn't picking the wrong channel: it's starting at the end. Running ads pointing at a website that doesn't explain what you sell is paying to bring people to a closed door. This is the order we follow.

1. The Google profile, first

In local searches the first thing that appears is the map with three businesses, not a website. Google spells out the proximity, relevance and prominence criteria in its Business Profile help: proximity isn't yours to control, the other two are. Correct category, real opening hours, current photos, regular posts and every review answered. It's the cheapest thing to do and the first to show.

2. The website: explain, and load

One page per service, named the way customers say it, the phone number visible without scrolling and the address as text, not inside an image. Almost all these searches happen on a phone: Google measures the real experience of visitors and documents it in Core Web Vitals.

3. Content, consistently

Articles that answer what people ask you on the phone. It's what sustains SEO over the medium term and what means that a year from now you won't depend on advertising.

4. And then, campaigns

Once there's somewhere to send traffic, paid advertising makes sense: it creates movement from month one while the rest matures. Before that, it's burning budget.

What to expect month by month

Honest timelines for a local Mataró business with normal competition:

  • Months 1 and 2: putting the house in order. The profile starts moving and can produce calls within weeks; the website, not yet.
  • Months 2 to 4: impressions appear for specific service-plus-neighbourhood searches.
  • Months 4 to 8: published content starts bringing visits and enquiries.
  • From month 8: it compounds. Older material keeps bringing people in and new pages rank faster.

We covered it in detail in the article on how long SEO takes. If after three months no intermediate signal has moved — indexed pages, impressions, average position — waiting isn't the answer: something is set up wrong.

Mistakes we see around here

  • Ads without a decent website. Money goes on clicks that land on a page that doesn't convince, and the conclusion becomes "advertising doesn't work".
  • An abandoned Google profile. Last photo from two years ago and reviews unanswered. It's the most profitable thing to fix and the most neglected.
  • Copying what Barcelona competitors do. Different size, different budget, different customer.
  • Changing direction every quarter. Content and rankings compound; restarting every three months is the most expensive way of never arriving.
  • Not measuring what matters. Followers are fine; what pays invoices is calls, messages and quotes requested.

What to check every month to know it's working

A plan without numbers is an expensive hunch. These are the five we review every month, and none of them needs paid tools:

  • Calls and route requests from the Google profile. It's the fastest-moving figure in a local business.
  • Impressions and distinct queries in Search Console: if the list of terms you appear for keeps growing, you're on track even while the phone stays quiet.
  • Visits arriving from search, kept separate from those coming from social or advertising.
  • Forms and WhatsApp messages received, counted by hand if necessary.
  • How many of those become customers. It's the only number that decides whether the rest is worth anything.

Those five tell you what to repeat and what to drop, instead of going on gut feeling.

What digital marketing costs in Mataró

Our prices are published and they're the same here as anywhere, because the work is the same. They're all on our pricing page:

  • Basic Presence, €400 a month: high-performance hosting, website and email migration included, 10 mailboxes, 3 articles a month on the site, 3 on the Google profile, every review answered and AI visibility work.
  • Mid Presence, €750 a month: the above with 15 mailboxes, 5 articles and 5 posts, plus Google Ads and Meta Ads management.
  • Advanced Presence, €1,500 a month: 25 mailboxes, 7 articles and 7 posts, campaigns and 2 monthly social media posts.

VAT excluded, no lock-in. Ad spend is separate: what you pay for the plan is the work, and the money Google or Meta take goes on your card, at an amount you decide. That way you always know which part of the spend is advertising and which part is work.

If you only need the website, Your Landing is €100 a month and Your Website €200 a month, with hosting, email and maintenance included. And custom software, automation and AI integration are quoted per project, because there the work varies enormously from case to case.

Which budget makes sense for your case

  • Neighbourhood shop or service: start with Basic. Profile, tidy website and consistent content. Plenty of local businesses notice movement with that alone.
  • High-ticket service (building work, clinics, professional advice): Mid, to add campaigns once the site converts.
  • Company with a sales team or online sales: Advanced, with more content and social presence.

And one recommendation we always give: if you're thinking of stopping in month two, better not to start. Content and rankings need a few months to show signals, and halfway through you've only paid for the slow part.

We work from Palamós, an hour from Mataró

Our office is in Palamós, on the Costa Brava, and we cover the whole province of Barcelona combining remote work with visits when they're needed: photos of the premises, a kick-off meeting, or closing a bigger project. Day-to-day runs on video calls and WhatsApp, which is how everyone communicates anyway.

Before hiring anyone, run this five-minute test: search your service plus your neighbourhood on your phone in incognito, see who appears on the map and who below it, then open your Google profile and check the date of the last post. Those two answers already tell you where to start.

Message us on WhatsApp with your business name and we'll tell you what we see and what we'd do first. No commitment and no forty-slide deck.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about digital marketing in Mataró

How much does digital marketing cost in Mataró?+

In our plans it's published and it's the same here as anywhere: from €400 a month for Basic Presence, with hosting, migration included, 10 mailboxes, three articles on the site, three on the Google profile, every review answered and AI visibility work. Mid is €750 and Advanced €1,500, with more content and campaign management. VAT excluded, no lock-in, and ad spend is separate.

Where do I start on a small budget?+

With the Google Business Profile, which is free and is what shows first for a local business: correct category, real hours, current photos and every review answered. Then make sure the website explains clearly what you sell and loads fast on mobile. Paid campaigns come last, once there's somewhere worth sending traffic.

How long before it shows?+

The Google profile can produce calls within weeks. The website and content take longer: first signals between months two and four, and enquiries from month four or five. What should move earlier is indexed pages, impressions and average position. If none of those three has moved after three months, something needs reviewing.

Do I need the site in both Catalan and Spanish?+

It depends on your customers, not on a rule. In Mataró both languages appear in commercial searches, and Catalan queries usually face less competition. If people write to you in both, having the site in both multiplies the combinations you can appear for and costs little extra.

Is paid advertising worth it in a city like Mataró?+

Yes, once the site converts and you know the margin each customer leaves. The advantage of a city this size is that you can target by area on a small budget and measure properly. What doesn't pay off is starting there: if the page they land on doesn't explain what you sell, the click costs the same and leaves nothing.

Does the agency need to be based in Mataró?+

Not for the day-to-day, which runs on video calls and WhatsApp. It does help for photographing the premises and for the meetings on a bigger project, and we travel for those. What matters far more than distance is that somebody picks up the phone and that you know what was done last month with your money.
