SEO in Mataró: where you can beat a chain and where you cannot

You search for what you sell and the top results are three companies from nowhere near here. That is normal, and it does not mean you have lost: it means you are fighting the wrong search.

Anyone with a shop or a workshop in the city knows the scene: you type what you sell into Google and the first results are chains and marketplaces. It feels like SEO in Mataró is a lost battle against companies with entire teams on the job. It is not, but you have to pick your ground carefully.

A retail city competing against chains

Mataró has 130,887 residents in 22.53 km², according to the municipality in figures published by Idescat, and a retail fabric generating 564.2 million euros of gross value added a year, plus another 235.7 from hospitality. There are 9,015 people registered as self-employed, 7,035 of them in services.

In other words: a great many small businesses, in a city that also has large retail floor space and where customers compare on their phone before going anywhere. That is the real fight, and it is not won by copying what a chain does.

Where you will not beat them, and it is worth accepting

Some searches are out of reach, and chasing them wastes months:

  • The bare generic term. "Trainers", "tyres", "sofas". There you are up against domains with thousands of links and budgets on another scale.
  • National comparisons and listicles. "Best X of 2026" is locked up by media outlets and affiliates who live off it.
  • Price. If your argument is being cheapest, there will always be somebody bigger who can hold out longer.

Accepting this is not giving up: it is stopping the spend on what will not happen and putting the effort where it decides.

Where you do beat them, comfortably

A chain has muscle, but it also has three structural weaknesses a local business exploits without spending more.

1. The search with the town in it

"Body shop Mataró", "optician in Mataró". That kind of search is settled by the map and by local businesses, not by a chain's national website. And in the Maresme you have to go beyond the city: plenty of people in Argentona, Cabrera, Vilassar, Premià or Arenys search with their own town's name, not yours.

2. "Near me" and "open now"

Google combines relevance, distance and prominence to decide who to show on the map. A chain with a store twenty kilometres away loses to you when somebody searches from three streets over. That advantage is yours and cannot be bought.

3. What you know and they cannot write

Real timings, what stock you have today, what sells in your trade around here, what problem the housing in a particular area has. A chain writes copy that has to work nationwide; you can write what only works for Mataró and the Maresme, and that is exactly what answers what people ask.

Hands searching on a phone, the gesture that decides which business gets the visit

Where to start, in this order

  1. A complete Google profile, with the exact category, services one by one, real opening hours and your own photos. It moves fastest; the step by step is in our guide to the Google Business Profile.
  2. One page per service or product family, in the words customers use. Not a single "services" page with everything inside it.
  3. Naming your real area on those pages: the towns you cover, written by name and with something of your own to say about each.
  4. Fresh reviews, answered, which is what decides between two similar results. The method is in how to get Google reviews.
  5. Content, every month, answering what people ask you on the phone.

The mistake of one page per town

It is tempting: copy the Mataró page and swap the name for Argentona, Premià, Vilassar. Google has been catching that for years and it does not work; it also leaves a site full of near-identical pages getting in each other's way.

What does work is slower and duller: naming the towns you genuinely serve inside the pages you already have, and building a dedicated page only when that town has enough demand of its own and something different to say —a real case from there, different hours, a service you only offer there—.

The technical part that does matter

No need to obsess, but there are three things a local business should not neglect. That the site opens fast on a phone, because almost all of these people search from the street. That every page has a distinct title saying what it is and where. And that the business details are marked up so the search engine does not have to guess: name, address, phone and hours, using the local business structured data Google documents.

Plus one house check: the phone number and address have to be exactly the same on the website, on the profile and in any directory you appear in. When they vary, the search engine gets suspicious.

How long this takes

The Google profile moves within weeks if it was badly set up or abandoned. Website pages take longer: you normally start seeing search visits between the third and sixth month, and it climbs on its own if the pace holds. The timings are covered in more detail in how long SEO takes to work.

The advantage over a chain is that you do not need to win everywhere. You need to win the twenty or thirty searches that end with somebody walking through your door, and that target is reachable within months.

What to check every month

  • How many people arrive searching for what you sell, not for your name.
  • How many calls and direction requests come out of the Google profile.
  • Which pages are climbing and which have gone six months without appearing in any search.
  • Which towns people come from, which in the Maresme tells you a lot.

And the test you can run today: step outside, take your phone and search for your product plus "Mataró". If the first screen is nothing but chains, you have work to do; if the map shows three local businesses and you are not one of them, you have work to do and you know exactly what it is.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about SEO in Mataró

Can a small Mataró business compete with a chain on Google?+

On generic national searches, no: those are won by domains with years of work and enormous budgets behind them. On searches that include the town name, on "near me" and on the map, the advantage is yours, because Google weighs distance from wherever the person is searching. The key is to stop fighting in the first group and concentrate on the second.

What does SEO cost in Mataró?+

Our plans are published: 400 € a month includes 3 articles, 3 posts on the Google profile, answered reviews, hosting, email and GEO positioning; 750 € goes to 5 and 5 with campaigns and 1,500 € to 7 and 7 with social media. If you need the website first, that starts at 100 € a month. All excluding VAT and with no lock-in.

Should I build a page for every town in the Maresme?+

No, unless that town has demand of its own and something different to say. Cloning the same page and swapping the town name stopped working years ago, and it leaves near-identical pages competing with each other. What does work is naming the towns you genuinely serve inside the pages you already have.

How long does it take to show?+

The Google profile moves within weeks if it was abandoned or wrongly categorised. Website pages take longer: search visits start showing between the third and sixth month, and keep climbing if the content pace holds. You do not need to win everywhere, only on the searches that end in a customer.

Which matters more, the Google profile or the website?+

For a business with a shop or workshop, the profile delivers sooner and with less effort, so it goes first. But it runs out: when somebody compares two similar businesses, or searches for something specific that does not fit in a profile, the website decides. The sensible approach is to sort the profile in month one and work on the site in parallel.

Does the agency need to be based in Mataró?+

No, but it does need to know the area and you need to be able to talk to whoever does the work. We are in Palamós, an hour up the coast, we work over video calls with a shared screen, and we come in person when it matters: the first meeting, the photos of the premises and the important reviews.
