Google Ads in Barcelona: your neighbourhood, not the whole city

In Barcelona, a loosely targeted campaign pays for clicks from people who live an hour from your premises or who are planning a trip from Berlin. You can narrow it down far more than you'd think, and pay less for every click.

Monday, nine in the morning. The owner of a dental clinic in Sant Andreu opens her ad campaign summary and sees she paid for over a hundred clicks last month. Calls: four. When she checks where the clicks came from, she finds people in Castelldefels, in Mataró and even in Germany. The campaign was set to “Barcelona” with Google's default location option, so the ad showed to anyone searching “dentist Barcelona”, wherever they lived. Nobody crosses the city for a check-up. That's why, with Google Ads in Barcelona, the job starts with deciding who should not see your ad.

Google lets you choose quite precisely where ads appear: countries, regions, a radius around a point or groups of locations. And, depending on the country, postcodes too. In its help page on targeting ads to geographic locations, the example it gives for postcode targeting is, as it happens, “08008, Barcelona”.

For a business that serves its own neighbourhood, that changes the maths. Barcelona has 1,713,247 residents, according to Idescat. If your customers come from within fifteen minutes, paying to reach all of them means paying for clicks from people who will never come.

For some businesses the whole city does make sense: those who go to customers' homes in any neighbourhood, those who sell online, or those with a speciality people will travel for. For everyone else, the neighbourhood is what counts.

Postcode or radius: which suits you

A radius is the easiest to set up: a point on the map and a few kilometres around it. In a city this dense, two kilometres already takes in several neighbourhoods with very different streets and customers. Postcodes follow the way the city is actually divided and let you add only the ones you want.

There's a simple way to choose them: look at the postcodes of your last fifty customers. If nearly all of them come from three or four, that's your campaign area. You can add others later, once you have data.

“Presence” or “presence or interest”: people searching for Barcelona from elsewhere

Google Ads' default option, “presence or interest”, shows ads to people who are or regularly are in your area, and also to people who have shown interest in it. Google explains in its help that it works out that interest from what people search for, from past searches or from places they've been, and gives the example of someone in Paris searching for a taxi in Los Angeles.

In Barcelona that matters twice as much, because a lot of people search for the city from elsewhere before they arrive. For a restaurant, a hotel, a shop in a busy tourist street or a guided tour, that may be exactly what you want: reaching people planning their trip from home. For a dental clinic, a language school or a plumber, it's wasted money. In those cases the right choice is “presence”, which only shows the ad to people who are or regularly are in the locations you've chosen.

In Barcelona a click has no fixed price: quality brings it down

In a city with this much competition, nearly everyone assumes the only way to show up is to bid more. That isn't how Google charges. In its definition of actual cost per click, it explains that you only pay the minimum needed to beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser just below you. And that rank doesn't come from the bid alone: it combines the ad's quality (how many clicks it's expected to get, how relevant it is to the search and what the page it leads to is like) with the bid, the competitiveness of that auction and the context of the search.

In plain terms: two advertisers bidding the same amount can pay different prices per click. The one whose ad echoes what the person typed, and whose page answers it, can hold the same position while paying less.

The page the click lands on counts too

If someone searches “dental implants Sant Andreu” and the ad takes them to the home page, with ten services and a team photo, the landing page experience is weak and the click costs more. What works is one page per service, with the neighbourhood, a guide price and a call or WhatsApp button in plain sight. We explain how to build one in what is a landing page.

Three languages in one city

People in Barcelona search in Catalan, in Spanish and in many other languages. According to Idescat, 437,663 residents hold a foreign nationality, one in four, and more than a third were born outside Spain. Then there are the visitors.

Since September 2026, Google Ads search campaigns no longer have a language setting: the ad shows in the language it's written in, and Google gives priority to the one that matches the language of the search. We go into more detail in Google Ads in Girona. In practice, if customers search for you in English, you need ads written in English, and the same goes for Catalan. And the page they land on has to be in that language too, as we explain in website in Catalan and Spanish.

What people actually type: the search terms report

Google Ads shows the real searches that triggered your ads in the search terms report. It's the screen that saves the most money and the one people look at least. In Barcelona, all sorts of searches turn up next to yours:

  • From people looking for a job or a course in your field.
  • From people who want something free or are searching how to do it themselves.
  • From visitors looking for something “open now” next to a landmark.
  • Containing another business's name.

Each of those becomes a negative keyword so your ad stops appearing for it. At first it's worth checking every week; later, every fortnight is enough. What happens when nobody looks is in Google Ads spends and doesn't sell.

One campaign per area or per service, not one for everything

If you have two premises, say in Gràcia and in Sant Martí, it's best to split them into two campaigns, each with its own postcodes and budget. Otherwise the one that gets more searches eats the other's money.

The same goes for services. A check-up doesn't leave the same margin as an implant, so it makes no sense for them to share a budget. If money is tight, start with one area and the service that leaves you the most margin, and widen it once you have a month of data.

How much you can pay per click

There's no click price that works for every business in Barcelona. What you can work out is how much you can afford to pay. An example with round numbers: if a new patient leaves €200 of margin on their first treatment and one in four people who call ends up coming in, you can pay at most €50 per call. If one in five visits to the page ends in a call, your ceiling per click is €10. Above that, every customer costs you money.

To know those ratios you have to measure. Calls, WhatsApp messages and form submissions can be tracked as conversions in Google Ads, which is what tells you the cost of each customer rather than just each click. If the numbers don't add up, in your case it may be better to start with the channels you don't pay for per click, as we explain in digital marketing in Barcelona.

Five things we see in Barcelona campaigns

  1. The whole city on a neighbourhood budget. The money is spread across 1.7 million people and runs out before lunchtime.
  2. The default location option for businesses that don't live off tourism. They pay for clicks from people planning their trip from home.
  3. One ad group for every service. The ad doesn't match what people search for and every click costs more.
  4. Ads only in Spanish in a city where people search for you in three languages.
  5. Nobody opens the search terms report. Months spent paying for “job” and “course”.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Google Ads in Barcelona

Can Google ads be shown in just one Barcelona neighbourhood?+

Yes. Google Ads lets you target a radius around a point or, in Spain, postcodes; its own help uses “08008, Barcelona” as the example. In practice you choose the postcodes of your neighbourhood and the ones next to it, starting with those that come up most among your customers.

How much does a click cost on Google Ads in Barcelona?+

There's no fixed price. It depends on the search and how many advertisers bid on it, and Google only charges you the minimum needed to beat the ad just below yours. Because the quality of the ad and the page weighs in that calculation, a well-made ad can pay less for the same position. That's why it's better to work out what you can afford per click than to look for an average.

Which location option should I use, “presence” or “presence or interest”?+

For local service businesses, such as a clinic, a school or a plumber, “presence” usually works best, as it only shows the ad to people who are or regularly are in your area. For restaurants, hotels or shops that live off visitors, “presence or interest” can work, because it also reaches people planning their trip from elsewhere.

Which language should my ads be in in Barcelona?+

The languages your customers search in. Since September 2026, search campaigns no longer have a language setting: the ad shows in the language it's written in, and Google prioritises the one matching the search. In Barcelona that usually means Spanish and Catalan, plus English if you work with foreigners or visitors.

How do I avoid paying for searches I'm not interested in?+

By checking the Google Ads search terms report, which shows what people actually typed before clicking. Every search that's no use to you, such as job, course or free searches, gets added as a negative keyword. Weekly at first.

How much should I spend a month on Google Ads in Barcelona?+

It depends on what you can afford to pay per customer. Your margin and your conversion ratios give you the most you can pay per call and per click, and the budget follows from that. The sensible approach is to start narrow, with one area and one service, and decide using the first month's data.

Is ad spend included in your monthly fee?+

No. The fee covers the management. What you spend on Google is paid directly to the platform, on your card and in your name, and we don't add any margin. That way you can always see which part is advertising and which part is our work.

How much does it cost to have you manage Google Ads in Barcelona?+

Google Ads and Meta Ads management comes with Mid Presence, €750 a month, and Advanced Presence, €1,500 a month, plus VAT. There's no setup fee and no minimum contract: thirty days' notice is enough to stop.
