Saturday of Temps de Flors, half past one. In the Barri Vell, people wander from one flower-filled courtyard to the next and, in between, look on their phones for somewhere to eat. A restaurant nearby has its menu and bookings on its website, but the website hasn't loaded for an hour. It sits on cheap shared hosting, with hundreds of other sites on the same machine, and support only answers a web form during office hours. By the time it's back up, it's Monday. The website was well built; what failed was the place it lives. That's what web hosting in Girona comes down to: coping with your best days and having someone answer when things go wrong.

What web hosting is, in two lines
Hosting is the computer that stays on day and night and delivers your website to whoever visits it. It usually comes with the padlock certificate, the backups and, sometimes, email. We go through the types and when it's worth switching in what hosting does your website need. Here we focus on what changes when your business is in Girona.
One thing to clear up first: the server doesn't have to be in Girona. What matters is that it's close by, in Spain or elsewhere in the European Union, that it copes with your traffic peaks and that there's someone behind it you can call.
The days in Girona when your website can't go down
Girona has a calendar you can see in the visitor numbers. Temps de Flors draws hundreds of thousands of people every year, according to 3Cat, and in 2026 it spread 141 floral projects across 113 spaces in the city from 9 to 17 May. At the end of October come the Fires de Sant Narcís. And in summer, locals are joined by visitors to the Costa Brava who come in for the day.
On those dates, far more people open your website at the same time, nearly always on a phone and in a hurry: they want the menu, the opening hours, to know if there's a table or how to get there. Cheap shared hosting splits one machine between many websites, and when several get busy at once, they all slow down. If yours is heavy as well, it can stop responding on exactly those days.
What to get ready before the busy dates
- Ask your provider what happens if one day you get ten times your normal traffic. If they can't answer, that's your answer.
- Slim the website down before May. Well-compressed photos and fewer plugins do more than an expensive plan. We explain why websites get slow in why your website is slow on mobile.
- A static website copes better. If it's built in HTML, with no database to query on every visit, the server barely breaks a sweat even when lots of people arrive at once.
- Don't touch anything the week before. No redesigns and no server moves on the eve of Temps de Flors, Sant Narcís or August.
Who answers when something goes wrong
Websites fail now and then: an update that goes wrong, a certificate that doesn't renew, a peak that overloads the machine. What makes the difference is how long it takes to get someone on the other end. Some providers only answer web forms during office hours; if the problem hits on a Friday afternoon, it gets looked at on Monday.
Before you sign, ask three things: how you report an outage, who answers and how quickly, weekends included. What to do in the meantime is in your website is down.

In Catalan or in Spanish, whichever you prefer
When the website is down and you're stressed, explaining it in your own language helps. With a local provider you can do it in Catalan or Spanish, by phone or on WhatsApp. And if your website is in both languages, it doesn't need special hosting: it's the same website with two versions. We explain how to organise it so Google shows each version to the right people in website in Catalan and Spanish.
Where the server is and why it matters to you
For speed and for your customers' data. The further the machine is from your visitors, the further each request has to travel. For a Girona business, with customers in the province, in Barcelona and in France, a server in Spain or another EU country is close to all of them.
If your website collects data through a form or a booking, that data is stored wherever the server is. When it leaves the European Union, data protection rules require extra safeguards, and it's worth knowing that before you sign. The websites we host are on a server in Spain.

Make sure your hosting doesn't lock out Google or AI
There's one problem almost nobody checks: the server, or the protection service in front of it, blocking the bots that read your website. Cloudflare, one of the most widely used services for protecting and speeding up websites, announced in July 2025 that it would block AI crawlers by default and that every new domain signing up would be asked whether to let them in, according to its press release. It can be changed at any time, but someone has to know the setting exists.
If the bots behind ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity can't read your website, those tools have nothing to go on when someone asks them for a business like yours in Girona. We explain how to work on that in GEO in Girona, and it's what we do in our generative engine optimization service.
Something similar happens with Google, by another route. In its documentation on how HTTP status codes affect its crawlers, Google explains that when a server responds with errors, its crawlers slow down, and that pages already indexed are kept for a while but eventually dropped. Hosting that fails often can cost you rankings without anyone telling you.

Domain and email, always in your name
Before comparing prices, check that the domain is registered to your company and that you can access it. If the hosting was set up years ago by whoever built your website and the domain is in their name, any change gets complicated. We cover it in who owns your domain.
The same goes for email: if the mailboxes live on the same machine as the website, the day the website goes down, email goes with it. Why it's worth getting this right is in business email with your own domain.
Cheap or managed hosting: do the maths for one Saturday
Shared hosting costs a few euros a month, and for a website that hardly gets any visits it can be enough. But the sum worth doing is a different one: what a Saturday in May with your website down costs you. Tables not booked, orders not placed, people ending up next door. If that figure is more than you save in a whole year of fees, cheap hosting turns out expensive.
Managed hosting means someone watches the server, updates it, makes and tests the backups and answers when you call. It's what makes sense if your website is the door your customers come in through.
Switching hosting without closing for a single day
A well-run move goes unnoticed: the website is copied to the new machine, tested, the domain is pointed at it and the old machine is left running for a few days just in case. Email is moved separately and with more care. If page addresses change, each one has to redirect to its new page, as we explain in migrate your website without losing rankings.
In Girona it also pays to choose the date well: January, February or after the Fires de Sant Narcís, well away from May and the summer.

Five things we see on Girona websites
- The hosting was set up years ago by whoever built the website and nobody knows the control panel password.
- Website and email on the same cheap machine: when one goes down, everything does.
- An expired certificate that makes browsers warn the site isn't secure, right in high season. How to avoid it is in SSL certificate for your website.
- A security plugin that blocks bots and keeps the website out of Google and AI answers without anyone noticing.
- Backups that have never been tested, stored on the same machine as the website.
Let's talk about your hosting, from the Palau Firal
We're three partners working from the Palau Firal in Sant Antoni de Calonge, in the Baix Empordà, with businesses in Girona and across the province, and in Barcelona too.
Send us your website address on WhatsApp. We'll check where it's hosted, whether it responds quickly, whether it lets Google and AI crawlers in and whether the certificate and the domain are in order, and we'll tell you with no commitment. If you prefer, write to us through the contact form.
