L'Hospitalet de Llobregat has 282,299 residents in 12.40 km², according to the municipality figures published by Idescat. It's Catalonia's second city and the densest in the country. For a local business that changes how SEO in L'Hospitalet works: distance stops being the deciding factor, because almost everything is close, and what decides is who explains best what they do and where.

The problem with saying only "L'Hospitalet"
Here, a site saying "service in L'Hospitalet" competes with hundreds of businesses packed into a tiny area. When somebody searches from the street, Google ranks by proximity, relevance and prominence — and in a city this compact, proximity barely separates anyone: there are ten competitors within a kilometre.
What does separate is the neighbourhood. L'Hospitalet behaves like six or seven cities stuck together: selling in Centre or Sant Josep isn't the same as selling in Bellvitge, Collblanc-la Torrassa, Santa Eulàlia or la Florida. People searching don't type "L'Hospitalet" on its own: they type their neighbourhood, or they search from it and let the phone fill in the rest.
The practical consequence is simple. A website that names the neighbourhoods it actually works in, naturally and throughout its content, shows up for searches the generic competition never touches.
Who you're really competing with
There's a quirk visible in both the statistics and the street: the daytime population is smaller than the registered one. Plenty of L'Hospitalet works in Barcelona, one metro stop away. That means two things for your SEO:
- You're competing with Barcelona too. Somebody finishing work in Sants searches for what they need nearby and gets businesses from both municipalities. Ranking well here means competing in a bigger market than the census suggests.
- They search at odd hours. Before nine and after seven. If your site doesn't make opening hours and the phone number obvious, that search goes to someone else.
Then there's language. In L'Hospitalet most commercial searches happen in Spanish, but a share happen in Catalan, and those queries face less competition. Having the site in both doubles the combinations you can appear for without doubling the business.

What to work on first, in order
Local SEO in a city like this follows a fairly clear order, and skipping it is why many projects never get going.
1. The Google profile, before anything else
In local searches the first thing to appear is the map with three businesses, not a website. Google spells out the proximity, relevance and prominence criteria in its Business Profile help. Proximity isn't yours to touch; relevance and prominence are, and they come from a complete profile with correct categories, current photos, regular posts and answered reviews.
2. One page per service, named the way customers say it
Not a single "services" page with twelve things inside. One page per thing you sell, written with the words people search for rather than the ones you use in the office. It's the boring work that decides nearly everything.
3. Neighbourhoods, inside the content
Mention the areas you genuinely cover: in the copy, in case studies, in the FAQs. There's no need to build twenty cloned pages swapping the neighbourhood name; Google spots that and it adds nothing. It's enough for the site to tell the truth about where you work.
4. Mobile speed
Practically all of these searches happen on a phone, often on the metro or in the street. Google measures the real experience of visitors and documents it in Core Web Vitals. A heavy site loses twice over: rankings and customers.
5. Content, consistently
Articles that answer what people ask you on the phone. Three a month for six months beats fifteen in January and nothing after.

How long before it shows
For a local business in L'Hospitalet with normal competition, the pattern is the usual one: the first two months put the house in order and produce no sales; between months two and four the first impressions appear for specific searches; between four and eight the calls start. The Google profile usually runs ahead and creates movement within weeks.
We wrote about it in detail in another article on SEO timelines, but the summary is what matters: if after three months indexed pages, impressions and average position haven't moved, something is set up wrong and needs reviewing, not more waiting.
Mistakes we see on local sites
- The address inside an image. Google reads text. If your street sits inside a JPG, it doesn't exist for the search engine.
- Different name, address or phone on the website, the Google profile and the directories. That inconsistency costs you, and fixing it is free.
- Copying head office's website. Franchises and branches reusing the brand's copy without saying anywhere that they're in L'Hospitalet.
- Confusing traffic with customers. Ranking for informational searches across Spain is good for the ego; what pays invoices is appearing when someone in your area searches for what you sell.
- Rebuilding without redirects. A redesign that changes every URL with nothing redirected throws away years of work in an afternoon.

How to see where you stand today
Before hiring anyone, spend five minutes on this:
- Search your service plus your neighbourhood on your phone, in incognito and on mobile data rather than your wifi. See who shows on the map and who below it.
- Type site:yourdomain.com into Google and count how many of your pages it has stored. If two come up, competition isn't your problem.
- Open your Google profile and check the date of the last post and the last photo.
Those three answers tell you whether your problem is the website, the profile or the content — three different jobs and three different invoices.
We work from Palamós and travel when it's needed
Our office is in Palamós, on the Costa Brava, and we cover the whole province of Barcelona by combining remote work with visits when they matter: photographing the premises, a kick-off meeting, closing a bigger project. Day-to-day runs on video calls and WhatsApp, which is how everyone communicates anyway.
If you'd rather have an agency with a door on your street, that's a fair preference and we won't argue with it. What matters more than distance is whether someone picks up the phone, whether a small change gets done the same day, and whether you know what was done last month with your money.
Message us on WhatsApp with your business name and we'll tell you what we see: where you appear, where you don't, and what we'd fix first. No commitment and no forty-slide deck.
